Frequently Asked Questions
My child has never played netball before. Is that okay?
Yes! We welcome players of all abilities, whether they are picking up a netball for the first time or already have playing experience. Our coaches create a supportive environment where every player can learn, develop and enjoy the game.
What standard of netball is required to join?
No previous experience is required. We welcome players of all abilities and support each individual to develop at their own pace, whether they play for fun, to improve their skills or to pursue higher-level playing opportunities.
Which age groups do you accommodate?
We offer training for players in school Years 3 to 13, divided into our Minis (Years 3–6), Juniors (Years 7–9) and Youth (Years 10–13) sections.
Do you have to live in Hitchin to join Hitchin Netball Club?
No. We welcome players from Hitchin and the surrounding towns and villages. Many of our members travel from across Hertfordshire and neighbouring counties to train with us.
Do you train outside?
Yes. Training takes place on the outdoor floodlit courts at The Priory School throughout the year. Players should dress appropriately for the weather, as sessions continue in most conditions unless it is unsafe to do so.
Do players have matches as well as training?
Yes. In addition to attending weekly training, most players will have opportunities to play in league matches, friendly fixtures and tournaments throughout the season.
League matches are usually played on Sundays at central venues across Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, depending on the league in which your child's team competes. This means families should expect some travel for fixtures, as matches are not normally played at our training venue.
The number of matches each player takes part in will vary depending on their age group, squad and the competitions they are entered into. Our coaches aim to provide appropriate playing opportunities that support each player's development and enjoyment of the game.
While regular attendance at training is expected, match availability is requested throughout the season to help coaches with team selection and planning.
How can parents support the Club?
Hitchin Netball Club is run almost entirely by volunteers, and we're always grateful for additional help.
Whether you can coach, umpire, help at events, assist with administration, support fundraising or simply volunteer occasionally, we'd love to hear from you. Every contribution, no matter how big or small, helps us provide the best possible experience for our players.
How are players selected for County and Regional Pathway trials?
Each season, the organisations responsible for County and Regional Performance Pathways invite clubs to nominate a limited number of players for trials.
Our coaching team reviews every eligible player against the published pathway criteria and the number of nominations available to the Club. We contact families of players we believe are currently ready for nomination rather than publishing trial information to all members.

How are teams selected for matches?
Our coaches select teams based on a range of factors, including attendance, effort, attitude, commitment, player development, positional balance and the specific requirements of each competition.
Selection is not based on one factor alone and may vary from match to match depending on the opposition, the purpose of the fixture and the positions that need to be covered.
Our aim is to provide every player with meaningful opportunities to develop, build confidence and enjoy competitive netball, while ensuring that teams are appropriately balanced for each fixture.
