Training & Player Development

Coaching sessions at Hitchin Netball Club take place on Tuesday evenings during term time at The Priory School, Hitchin.

Our training programme provides a supportive, enjoyable environment where players can develop their netball skills, fitness, confidence and understanding of the game at an appropriate level for their age and experience.

Minis Training – Years 3 to 6

Our Minis sessions introduce and develop the fundamentals of netball in a fun, supportive and engaging environment, helping players build confidence while learning core skills and developing their understanding of the game.

Juniors Training – Years 7 to 9

Players usually train within their own year group, developing their skills, confidence and understanding of the game. Particularly talented players may be invited to train with an older group where appropriate for their development.

Youth Training – Years 10 to 13

Youth training has a greater focus on developing advanced technical skills, tactical understanding, fitness and effective team play.

Coaching & Fitness Development

Our coaching sessions develop players' technical skills, tactical understanding and fitness in a supportive and enjoyable environment.

Sessions include drills focusing on areas such as:

• passing and catching;

• shooting;

• footwork and pivoting;

• dodging and movement;

• attacking and defending;

• decision-making; and

• teamwork and communication.

​

Training also incorporates interval work, speed exercises and game-based conditioning to improve fitness and prepare players for match play.

​

As players develop, sessions become progressively more challenging, helping them build resilience, game awareness and the physical fitness needed to perform consistently throughout a match.

Progression to Match Play

Once players have developed the appropriate skills and confidence for match play, they may have opportunities to represent Hitchin Netball Club in leagues, tournaments and friendly fixtures.

We introduce competition at an appropriate stage in each player's development, with the aim of ensuring that match play remains a positive, enjoyable and supportive experience.

Matches & Tournaments

Competitive match opportunities may begin from Year 4, depending on player development and the competitions available.

​

HNC teams participate in winter and summer leagues. Matches are usually played on Sundays at central venues across Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. Friendly matches and tournaments are also arranged throughout the season when suitable opportunities arise. Coaches will share details with families once the Club’s participation has been confirmed.

Fixture information and availability requests are shared through Spond or TeamReach. Coaches normally confirm match squads at least seven days before a fixture.

​

Selection is based on several factors, including:

• Player availability

• Training attendance

• Player development and experience

• Positional requirements

• The nature of the competition

​

Coaches aim to provide fair and meaningful opportunities throughout the season. However, selection and equal court time cannot be guaranteed for every fixture.

​

Inclusivity & Player Pathways

Hitchin Netball Club welcomes players of all abilities. Whether a player is completely new to netball or already competing at a high level, our coaching programme is designed to help them develop at their own pace.

​

We also support players who wish to progress to higher levels of competition by providing guidance and opportunities where appropriate.

​

Some of our players also train within external performance and development pathways, including Hertfordshire County Netball, the London Mavericks Futures Programme and local development squads.

​

With over 220 young players, we are incredibly proud of our training programme. Our dedicated coaches and volunteers work hard to deliver engaging, high-quality sessions — and, most importantly, we believe netball should be fun for everyone.
